SECURE YOUR HOME WiFi

If you’re working from home make sure your home WiFi is secure and encrypted.

Users often set up their home networks in a rush to get their connection ready as soon as possible. Most people do not take any steps to secure their home network, making them easily accessible to hackers.

A router is usually just a small computer with its own operating system, software, and vulnerabilities.

Routers often advertise their type and make directly in the wireless network’s name (SSID), making it easy for hackers to see what type of router it is and how to hack it.

Changing the router’s SSID and the admin username and password are the first steps in securing a home WiFi network.

Updating the router’s firmware is something that should be done on a regular basis.

Most routers fail to notify users when an update is available, even though these updates are essential to patch security holes.

A stolen mobile device is also a risk to both home and office WiFi networks, as the device has direct access to the networks it has connected to.

Remotely wiping a stolen device is something that should be done as soon as possible.

Key takeaways:

Always use the most secure encryption method your equipment supports, like WPA.

Change the default administrator username and password on your router.

For confidential materials, always use encrypted protocols like HTTPS and a VPN.
