Email security firm Agari is investigating Scattered canary a Nigerian cyber-criminal group who recently exploited the cyber vulnerabilities of Covid19 and successfully filed fraudulent unemployment claims in numerous American States.
This has netted the cyber criminals hundreds of thousands of dollars in scam payments
It includes regular unemployment payments, the extra $600 per week that out-of-work Americans can claim during the pandemic, plus the one-time $1,200 payment eligible adults are receiving under the Cares Act.
South Africa has similar regular unemployment grants and Covid19 relief grants such as the R350 SASSA Social relief of distress grant, older persons and disability grants R1 860, war veterans and older persons older than 75 grant R1 880, foster child grant R1 040 per child, care dependency grant R1 860 and child support grant R440 per child.
The cyber criminals are using stolen personal information.
In 2017 South Africa suffered a massive data leak (South Africa’s Master Deeds ‘breach’) which contained the private data of millions of South Africans – including ID numbers, contact details, addresses, and income estimates.
This case appears to be merely negligence and ignorance by the storing of a database of more than 60 million personal records on an unsecured server.
The leaked database was a 27.2GB backup file residing on a server and could be downloaded via a browser via an URL such as http://IP-NUMBER:443
